It is not a necessity. You really do not need it in ur hermit crabs cage. They will live without them, that is for sure. I've had my hermies for a while now, with no such thing as a moon glow light.
Moon glow lights r made to imitate the moon is glow, so they do not bother ur nocturnal buddies. They're not very bright. Any other lightbulb would bother them, & is not advised. However, they r not a necessity, but I think ur hermit crabs might be happier with one then without one.
I would not worry about it, as some moon glow lights can be a little bit high priced. But no, I have never heard of any pet NEEDING one. You really only should have one if ur hermit crabs temperature is too low at night time.
A moon glow light is a light that is specially designed to mimic moonlight, so it wo not disturb nocturnal animals. They r usually green, blue or purple bulbs & look a lot like a ''black light'' (although a black light is not the same thing).
Moon glow lights r not specifically needed for hermit crabs, but of course u need to keep their habitat at the proper temperature: between 73 & 83 degrees F at all times. So in that sense, incandescent moon glow bulbs r very useful to keep the heat up because u can leave them on all day & night & their light wo not bother the hermit crabs, unlike a normal light bulb, which would. But if u r having no temperature problems, or u r heating the habitat some way other than with lights, then u do not need to use moon glow lights just for the sake of having them.
I do not know about hermit crabs, but my daughter and I have a bearded dragon and 2 leopard geckos that use moon glow lights. The emit heat while stimulating nighttime. This way, reptiles stay warm without using a bright light and disrupting their sleep cycles.
