Soon l will be getting a blue tongue skink. Some say UV is needed, some say it is not. I am going to provide it just in case. But l have a question:

Would l need to provide a heat lamp along with the UV lamp? Or is the UV light multipurpose in that it provides needed heat (100F) and UV?
I’m scared that if l have both the heat and UV lamp, the temperature will rise well beyond the recommended 100F.

No - UV tubes do not provide enough heat.

You can put ur hand right on a UV tube & it would feel mildly warm.

If u need to achieve 100F, u will need another heat source, just get a low wattage. The lower the wattage, the lower the temp it gives off.

Start with a 60W bulb & if it is not warm enough, get a 75W bulb & keep on increasing the wattage until u get the correct temperature.

If u r using a standard household spot bulb, they will be very cheap.

Well done on giong for the safe > sorry approach to reptile care :)

Some reptiles need the light but they just do not need the heat, their skin takes in the uv rays but they do not need the temperature way up.

a UV light acts as the sun kinda. The sun has special rays that help reptiles and other animals grow and keep healthy. Although it is better for your animal to have REAL sunlight, a UV light will help the animal stay healthy.

I have a Red Eared Slider and I only have a UV light for him. They absorb a lot of their vitamin from this light source so YES it is very important to have one!

I have been thinking about buying him a small heat lamp as well.

Buy a temperature sticker that will show you what the temp is. Just stick it on the front of your lil guys home!

I hope this info helps =)
