l got a bunch of supplies and a tank for christmas and my mom said l have to get something that can live in a tank this size for at least 3 or 4 years. And is there anything small enough that l would be able to get more than one of?

Wow how rude of answerer #1 saying reptiles do not have feelings. Now that is someone I would want to take advice on which pet to choose??!!
Umm. I have had a variety of reptiles - iguanas, snakes, toads, frogs, turtles, & now a bearded dragon. I can vow & prove that not only do they have feeling, but they have personalities, memories, & more. I call my bearded dragon my doggie with scales. She knows that when I pull her leash & harness out it means she is going for a ride in the car & gets excited. She knows which one of us pet her in which way (one scratches uner her chin, one pets her tail, & I usually rub her back) depending on what she wants will make who she goes to.
As far as what can live in a 20g its whole life, well this is honestly a limited list.
A leopard gecko, anoles, fire-belly toads, other small toads or frogs, scorpions, millipedes, hermit crabs, some types of snakes (like corn snakes). Pretty much everything may be able to start in 20g, but will soon need a bigger tank.

For the animal is comfort I would't go for any lizard that grows more than 6 inches body length, but I'd want to create a natural looking habitat. Small snakes that would stay small would fit, but only one. You sound like you're new to reptile keeping, I'd go for a couple of anoles if you want more than one. They're a good start for novice herpetologists.

geckos, lizards, salamanders, frogs, snakes, there r TONS of reptiles that can live in small tanks like this.
take a visit to a local petsmart, etc. & talk to an employee, they will point out wich of the animals can live in ur tank. Usually there r tanks out in the open with small reptiles in them that have an information card on/near them that tells how much experience is needed to care for them, how long they will live, how large they will grow, etc.

Please research them properly though by going to various gecko websites. (Meaning, do not listen to the complete CRAP that the pet store tries to tell you. They're normally always wrong. My gecko almost died because I listened to them.)

reptiles dont have feelings. all reptiles can live in a 20 gallon tank if they can fit. they also have no memory so thats why they cant learn tricks.
